“I have a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences from Maastricht University. I’ve always been very interested in neuroscience and the specialisation in Neuromodulation was a revelation to me.

After my bachelor, I knew for sure I wanted to do a master’s programme in a neuroscience related area. I looked at several options and when I came across the specialisation Neuromodulation, which is only taught at Maastricht University, I knew it was exactly what I was looking for. I also longed to stay in Maastricht because I’m truly convinced of the benefits of Problem-Based Learning. In addition, the university’s international environment has a great vibe and fuels creativity.

The specialisation Neuromodulation offers a wide range of applications, using both invasive and non-invasive techniques, to alleviate symptoms and decrease abnormalities. Maastricht has gained quite a reputation in neuromodulation and the researchers we have as teachers in this two-year programme are leading in their field. The second year is entirely made up of an internship, in a clinical, industrial or academic setting.

After I graduate I’d like to do a PhD. I’m very interested in fundamental research in neuromodulation as there is still so much that needs to be investigated. I would like to gain a better understanding of the workings of the brain and how it responds to neuromodulation. Then we can really improve the treatment of disorders and improve the quality of life of patients.”
