Daniel (Romania), Biomedical Sciences - Genetics & Genomics
'Genetics & Genomics' is all about exploring, analysing and understanding genetic causes, using test techniques to identify disease and possible treatment options

Studying at Maastricht University (UM) is a personalised, life enriching experience that prepares you for the future, both professionally and personally. Our bachelor’s and master’s programmes are designed for students who have an intrinsic curiosity in human behaviour and health. Students who want to ‘go the extra mile’ on a professional and/or personal level. What’s your extra mile?

“I have a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences from Maastricht University and I was keen to do my master’s here as well. I particularly like the way you are made responsible for organising your own time.

Problem-Based Learning (PBL) was new to me in my bachelor’s. It gives you lots of freedom, but also lots of responsibility and I like that. It prepares you for a career after your studies. I also looked at master’s programmes at other Dutch universities, but nothing could compare with this particular programme at UM, nor with the benefits of PBL. The international welcoming atmosphere here has made me really feel at home.

My specialisation in Genetics & Genomics is all about exploring, analysing and understanding genetic causes, using test techniques to identify disease and possible treatment options. And very important: why do some people get sick, while others don’t? I’ve been interested in these questions all my life. In my view, genetic testing should become the standard in diagnostic medicine. My dream goal is to set up my own genetic test centre back in Romania, covering the entire spectrum, from preventive treatment to genetic counselling. First, I will be applying for a double degree, combining this master’s in Maastricht with a second master’s in Japan or South Korea. It is still too early to say whether I will succeed, but I’m very excited about all the options.”

Daniel posts weekly on Instagram about his experiences during the master's programme and his life in Maastricht.

He's also happy to answer your questions about the programme and about (student) life in Maastricht via DM on Instagram.
