Jana (Germany), Biomedical Sciences - Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism
Fundamental research into how nutrition and physical activity affect your metabolism, how changes in lifestyle have an effect on disease is what interests me most

Studying at Maastricht University (UM) is a personalised, life enriching experience that prepares you for the future, both professionally and personally. Our bachelor’s and master’s programmes are designed for students who have an intrinsic curiosity in human behaviour and health. Students who want to ‘go the extra mile’ on a professional and/or personal level. What’s your extra mile?

“I did a minor about nutrition in Finland, approaching it from a public health angle. It helped me decide which biomedical specialisation I wanted to do: Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism. The minor made me realise I was fascinated by the science part more than the public health angle. Fundamental research into how nutrition and physical activity affect your metabolism, how changes in lifestyle have an effect on disease is what interests me most. In this programme, all these aspects come together in a very interdisciplinary way. Combine that with the Problem-Based Learning approach and the unique internship period and you have the perfect combination!

Apart from the uniqueness of this programme, another reason for me to stay in Maastricht is the fact that UM is so student focused. The needs and interests of students really come first. The programme is very small-scale which makes building personal connections so much easier.

For my internship next year, I would like to work at NUTRIM, the UM School of Nutrition and Translational Research in Metabolism. After graduation, my goal is to continue with a PhD and carry out ground-breaking research to improve the general health of people, combining nutrition and physical activity in such a way that everyone can embrace that lifestyle.”

Jana posts weekly on Instagram about her experiences during the master's programme and her life in Maastricht. She's also happy to answer your questions about the programme and about (student) life in Maastricht via DM on Instagram.
