Mandana (Cyprus), Biomedical Sciences - Biomedical Imaging
My dream is to design my own cannabinoid-based medicine and use it to increase the quality of life of patients and cure diseases

Studying at Maastricht University (UM) is a personalised, life enriching experience that prepares you for the future, both professionally and personally. Our bachelor’s and master’s programmes are designed for students who have an intrinsic curiosity in human behaviour and health. Students who want to ‘go the extra mile’ on a professional and/or personal level. What’s your extra mile?

“I have a bachelor’s degree in Biology from York University. For my master’s I decided to find a more internationally oriented environment.

I am fascinated by the specialisation 'Biomedical Imaging' because imaging techniques are essential to support diagnoses. In this very interdisciplinary programme we also learn how biomedical imaging can help assess the effectiveness of treatments and help in the development of new treatments. I’m particularly interested in the development of cannabinoid-based treatments. In our society people see cannabis as a recreational drug, whereas medicinal use of cannabinoids - the compounds found in cannabis - go back 5,000 years.

I chose to come to Maastricht University because of the international environment and the Problem-Based Learning approach, which suits me very well. The 10-month internship in the second year of the programme was also a decisive factor for me. My goal is to spend my internship in Israel at a research facility there, because Israel is leading in cannabis research worldwide. My dream is to design my own cannabinoid-based medicine and use it to increase the quality of life of patients and cure diseases.”

Mandana posts weekly on Instagram about her experiences during the master's programme and her life in Maastricht. She's also happy to answer your questions about the programme and about (student) life in Maastricht via DM on Instagram.
