Your future

The bachelor’s programme in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence offers excellent chances for people who want to make a difference in the world by pursuing a job or master’s degree in these fields.

Since we started the bachelor's programme, the demand for experts in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence has shot through the roof. Our diplomas offer excellent job prospects both within and outside of the Netherlands. However, before you start working you may want to further your knowledge by participating in one of our master’s programmes.

Knowledge Engineering

Master's programmes

Within Maastricht University, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence graduates can continue on to the following master’s programmes so you can deepen and extend the knowledge you acquired during your bachelor's:

  • Artificial Intelligence (MSc): a 2-year master’s programme, taught in English. You will learn to design intelligent computer systems in various applications, from patient diagnosis, image recognition, and traditional games like chess to interactive games, information gathering, and natural language processing. Read more

  • Data Science for Decision Making (MSc): a 2-year master’s programme, taught in English. You will use machine learning and applied mathematics to analyse and optimise processes and solve problems, from planning customer services, optimising logistics, and recognising patterns to predicting customer needs, determining optimal negotiation strategies and detecting valuable data from brain signals. Read more

Maastricht University offers you a lot of freedom of choice during your master’s. There are 4 core courses in each Master’s program, the remaining courses are elective. Depending on your interests, you can combine courses from the master’s programmes Artificial Intelligence and Data Science for Decision Making. During the second year you have the opportunity to do an internship at a company or research institution. Furthermore, during your master you can follow a minor in Quantum Computing.

Other master’s programmes

Generally speaking, your bachelor’s diploma allows access to national and international master’s programmes in Artificial Intelligence. This includes specific topics such as logic and cognitive science. Due to our data science focus, you also qualify for data science master’s programmes – including in topics like systems biology and business intelligence.

Alumni @ Work

Space technology

Marta Dávila Mateu obtained a bachelor’s degree in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence in Maastricht. Now, she is an MSc Computer Science student at the University of Southern California. In between her studies, she worked as a data and software engineer for the Meteosat programme of the European Space Agency. “I was the only programmer in a team of five people. If the satellite’s software needed an update, I was the one writing the code for that satellite. That is pretty cool!”

E-Health

Marc Pont (who obtained both his bachelor’s and master’s degree in Maastricht) works as a Decision Support Specialist and Data Scientist at the e-health company Intergrin. “A classical programmer thinks from the perspective of the code they need to write, and shapes the data accordingly. We have learned to think using data as a starting point. Because of that, we are much closer to business processes. When companies understand that, they are eager to have us on board.”

Data Science Consultancy

After graduating as a BSc in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Nina Krommedijk started her professional career as a Data Science Consultant. She works at Datacation, a Data Science Consultancy start-up located in Eindhoven and Amsterdam. “I am creating a dashboard to advice companies on the new pension rules required by the government as well as a method for early segmentation of pancreas cancer on post-operative patients with the use of CT-scans. At Maastricht University she had the opportunity to follow the 'Educatieve Minor'. “I obtained my 2nd degree in teaching Mathematics. Learning how to properly convey your knowledge is extremely powerful. Especially with our background, this practical knowledge is very valuable.”
