I’m looking forward to my internship in Japan next year; I will be assisting in research into the use of stem cells to combat tumours in certain types of cancer
Studying at Maastricht University (UM) is a personalised, life enriching experience that prepares you for the future, both professionally and personally. Our bachelor’s and master’s programmes are designed for students who have an intrinsic curiosity in human behaviour and health. Students who want to ‘go the extra mile’ on a professional and/or personal level. What’s your extra mile?
“I have a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences from Maastricht University. During my bachelor’s, I did a minor in Molecular Biotechnology in Leiden. That convinced me I wanted to become a researcher.
In my first year as a bachelor’s student, I attended a presentation by professor Mark Post, perhaps best known for his pioneering work in cultured meat. That triggered my interest in the specialisation Regenerative Medicine (RM), which has only grown ever since. I looked at other master’s programmes, also at other universities, but I decided to stay in Maastricht. Not only because of this specialisation; the Problem-Based Learning approach of Maastricht University was also a strong factor to stay in Maastricht.
In the RM specialisation, you investigate the use of biomedical techniques to stimulate the human body to regenerate itself. Stem cell technology is a well-known technique. The programme offers you a wide range of career opportunities. Personally, I see myself as a researcher in the future, combining research with teaching. In the short term, I’m very much looking forward to my internship next year, which I will spend in Japan. I will be assisting in research into the use of stem cells to combat tumours in certain types of cancer. One of the professors at Kyoto University has won the Nobel Prize for his ground-breaking research in this field, so I’m very excited to go there next year, even though I will have to step completely out of my comfort zone.”
Simone posts weekly on Instagram about her experiences during the master's programme and her life in Maastricht. She's also happy to answer your questions about the programme and about (student) life in Maastricht via DM on Instagram.
