Studying at Maastricht University (UM) is a personalised, life enriching experience that prepares you for the future, both professionally as personally. Our bachelor’s and master’s programmes are designed for students who have an intrinsic curiosity in human behaviour and health. Students ‘who want to go the extra mile’ on a professional and/or personal level. What’s your extra mile?
“I also did my bachelor’s here in Maastricht, ialso n Biomedical Sciences. For my master’s I visited Open Days of several other universities, but because of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) method I wanted to stay here.
Before I came to Maastricht I was a bit shy, not eager to express my opinions. The PBL teaching method has encouraged me to improve myself. Now, I love the discussions in the tutorials and the feedback you get from your fellow students and tutors. Since the opportunities to study on Aruba are sparse, the Netherlands is a logical option and Maastricht is a home away from home to me. I’ve always been passionate about biomedical science, in particular immunology which is about finding the mechanisms behind certain diseases. When I graduate, I want to apply for a PhD position in immunology, since that is the field I would like to build a career in.
So far, I love the programme. The workload is impressive but that’s partly because I’m a member of a focus group too, giving feedback about the programme to the programme director. I will do my first three-month internship this year in the haematology department at the MUMC+ hospital here, working with immune cells. In the second year, there will be an eight-month internship.
My dream career is to stay in academia and combine teaching with conducting my own research projects. Later on in life, I would like to go back to Aruba and - perhaps as a teacher - inspire others to open up, step out of their comfort zone and improve themselves.”
