Anil Yaqoob (Germany/Pakistan), Global Health
We should support low- and middle-income countries in providing universal healthcare

Studying at Maastricht University (UM) is a personalised, life enriching experience that prepares you for the future, both professionally as personally. Our bachelor’s and master’s programmes are designed for students who have an intrinsic curiosity in human behaviour and health. Students who want to ‘go the extra mile’ on a professional and/or personal level. What’s your extra mile?

“I studied medicine in Germany and Kyrgyzstan and I’m a trained doctor. However, I wanted to widen my perspective and do more than treat diseases.

I was working for an NGO in Kyrgyzstan and saw the impact of primary healthcare on the population. Health promotion, prevention and educating people about health is very important. I decided to look for a master’s programme that could teach me the skills to support low- and middle-income countries to achieve high quality healthcare that is also affordable.

I decided for this master’s programme because it puts global health issues in a global perspective, analysing health policies as well. The fact that this master’s is only one year was also a decisive factor. Although it makes the programme very intense. It’s interactive because of the Problem-Based Learning method, which is especially helpful in this master’s. You’re building your critical and analytical skills in a very constructive way. As to my personal development, I’m also improving my presentation skills.

For me, this master’s is ideal because it combines the theoretical, practical and political angle. I definitely want to make an impact on society and hope to have the appropriate skills in future to do so. My dream job would be to work for the United Nations Development Programme.”

Anil posts weekly on Instagram about his experiences during the master's programme and his life in Maastricht.

He's also happy to answer your questions about the programme and about (student) life in Maastricht via DM on Instagram.
