Laura Broek (Swiss/Dutch), Global Health
I want to achieve equity and equality in health across the world

Studying at Maastricht University (UM) is a personalised, life enriching experience that prepares you for the future, both professionally as personally. Our bachelor’s and master’s programmes are designed for students who have an intrinsic curiosity in human behaviour and health. Students ‘who want to go the extra mile’ on a professional and/or personal level. What’s your extra mile?

"I did a Double Degree bachelor’s study in Rotterdam in International Relations and Global Health and then I took a gap year. During that year I did an internship at the United Nations in New York City and in Geneva. It was a phenomenal year and coincided with the year of the General Assembly, which was fascinating. It strengthened my belief that health is the interplaying factor. Health impacts everything and everything impacts health. In the Global Health programme you learn about all these different actors that play a role in addressing issues. The programme also highlights the global perspective of health.

I chose this particular master’s programme because it really is very international, with many different nationalities in the classroom. As I’ve lived in the United States, in Ethiopia, Belarus and Azerbaijan myself, I love that mix of cultures and backgrounds. I was also impressed by the list of partner universities and the electives we can choose from. That makes this master’s really unique. I’ve opted for Thailand and the elective ‘Human Rights’.

It’s my goal to work for the World Health Organization, in the area of health and international relationships. I’m passionate about refugees which is a challenging area, but I love being challenged. This master’s will teach me about the different perspectives to get a global understanding of the field.”

Laura posts weekly on Instagram about her experiences during the master's programme and her life in Maastricht.

She's also happy to answer your questions about the programme and about (student) life in Maastricht via DM on Instagram.
