Why this programme?

Economics

The MSc Economics program follows a unique teaching approach. The classical, generic economics education focuses heavily on theory and methods, but often treats real-world applications as an afterthought. At Maastricht University, we turn this around. We start by identifying important societal challenges and then teach advanced economic theory and empirical methods to equip you with the knowledge and skills to address them. This teaching approach is in line with the “Maastricht-DNA” of problem-based learning and makes our program unique compared to other MSc Economics programs. The programme builds on and complements the fundamentals of your bachelor's programme in economics, as it teaches you how to apply economics to real-life challenges.

MA Economics - Why this programme

Training future economists: career preparation

Our challenge-driven teaching approach, in which you will work on real-life case studies, will equip you with strong problem solving abilities. Combined with Maastricht University’s international character and small-scale education (max. 15 students per group), you will develop key skills needed to succeed in your professional career in the global labour market. Through this programme, you will sharpen your critical thinking, develop your professional communication and interpersonal skills.

Strong community

Our programme prioritises community building, organising social events and study trips regularly. You will also be invited to participate in different research activities, such as seminars or research workshops.

One master, TWO degrees! - Double Degree programme

The Dual Degree programme at the School of Business and Economics lets you study at two universities and earn two master’s degrees.

You can participate at the beginning of the academic year in September, completing part of your master's programme at an institution abroad and part at SBE. After completing all the requirements of both master's programmes, you will be awarded a degree from each university. Almost all Dual Degree programmes can be completed with little or no delay in your studies and with minimal extra fees. The Dual Degree programme has carefully selected partner universities that are high-profile, research-oriented and preferably accredited by both EQUIS and AACSB.

Problem-Based Learning

As with most UM programmes, the School of Business and Economics uses Problem-Based Learning (PBL). In small tutorial groups of no more than 15 students, you seek solutions to ‘problems’ taken from real-world situations. Instructors only give help as needed, allowing you to develop independence and problem-solving skills useful to your career. This dynamic, collaborative system has one of the highest knowledge retention rates of any teaching method.
