Why this programme?

Digital Business and Economics

Advances in digitalisation come with many benefits, such as a more connected and integrated digital society. On the other hand, the digital revolution also creates significant disruption, which affects all of us. For this reason, it is important for businesses and policy makers to be prepared for the important changes our society is facing and will continue to face due to rapid digital transformation.

This Digital Business and Economics master programme provides you with the skills to navigate our future world and help companies, NGOs and policy makers across the globe manage complex questions related to the digital transformation.  You will explore questions such as: Should AI be used to replace people in positions that require respect and care such as a judge or a soldier? How can we avoid bias from creeping into algorithms? How should self-driving cars be regulated? How do we stay in control of a complex intelligent system?

What will you learn?

Jointly designed by several departments and experts, this programme provides you with cutting edge knowledge and skills on digitalisation through the lens of various fields such as strategy, innovation, marketing, data analytics, game theory, ICT, accounting, economics and others. Building on a strong theoretical foundation in economics and business, you will study the nature and impact of digitalisation on our society.

This program will give you the skills to:

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the existing digital technologies as well as their  feasibility and implementation in diverse business contexts;
  • Analyse real life challenges related to digitalisation (such as machine ethics, security, singularity, inequality, etc.) and come up with practical solutions;
  • Support decision making processes by interpreting these challenges and find innovative digital solutions;
  • Lead the digital transformation of your future workplace on a managerial level.

Close contact with professionals!

Our curriculum is developed by experts and focuses on timely topics related to digitalisation. It includes workshops in which we work on relevant, real life cases. This is guaranteed by our Advisory Board, whose members work in companies such as Shell and Daimler AG. You will work closely with the professional organisations through company case studies focused on digitalisation strategies, and through workshops and lectures given by alumni, guest speakers and digitalisation experts from various sectors.

Small groups = big advantages

Problem-Based Learning

As with most UM programmes, the School of Business and Economics uses Problem-Based Learning (PBL). In small tutorial groups of no more than 15 students, you seek solutions to ‘problems’ taken from real-world situations. Instructors only give help as needed, allowing you to develop independence and problem-solving skills useful to your career. This dynamic, collaborative system has one of the highest knowledge retention rates of any teaching method.

International experience

Maastricht University is among the top 15 most international universities in the world. We encourage our students to see themselves as world citizens, and our educational programmes encourage study abroad, multilingualism, cultural exchange and sensitivity, and international career goals.

SBE-CLASSROOM

The International Classroom

UM embraces the International Classroom, an environment where our differences become our strengths. From day one, you’ll be challenged with differing viewpoints and experiences as you interact with staff and students from all over the world. This kind of interaction brings you closer to the programme’s goal of teaching you not only facts and concepts but also international accessibility and understanding. SBE is one of the most international faculties at Maastricht University, with over 60% of students and 55% of the academic staff coming from abroad, representing roughly 60 different nationalities.

Study abroad and get to know new people

MA exchange

Students from every one-year, full-time SBE master’s programme can apply for a master’s exchange semester. However, a master's exchange is only possible if you have 100% study progress. Students who will be doing their exchange in a third, extended, semester will take priority over students who will run into more of a study delay. Competition for exchange positions is high, and applying for a semester abroad does not guarantee a spot or that you will be allocated to your preferred choice. SBE will consider your study progress, motivation, academic achievements and curriculum vitae in the selection process.

  • For more information, please contact the International Relations Office.
  • If you are already an SBE student, you can find more information in the student portal.
