German language course

From the very first group lesson, an experienced teacher will help you build on your vocabulary and understand how the language works. You’ll use traditional learning methods as well as online learning tools, such as wikis, blogs and social media. The course not only focuses on speaking and listening skills, additional work on grammar, as well as reading and writing skills, will support you in the language learning process. Your teacher will be a (near-) native speaker, and the group lessons will be conducted in German. Instructions will only be given in Dutch or English if it’s absolutely necessary.

After completing the sixth module, you’ll be able to communicate professionally in German, from speaking and writing to debating, negotiating and giving a presentation.

German A1 (DE-A1)

German A1 is for people with no prior knowledge of German. An intake is not necessary. In this course, you will learn the basis of German grammar. You will build a vocabulary that allows you to read and understand simple sentences. You will also learn to:

  • introduce yourself;
  • ask for directions;
  • order food and drinks;
  • make purchases at a shop.

German A2 (DE-A2) and B1 (DE-B1)

German A2 and B1 are for people with a basic knowledge of German and people who have completed the previous module. In these modules, you will further develop your vocabulary and your understanding of German grammar and will address more complicated topics of conversation.

In module B1 you will:

  • learn to talk about interesting and relevant topics from the fields of study and work​;
  • talk about the past and future;
  • lead discussions and give a presentation about a current topic;

  • talk about cities in Germany (history) and your hometown;
  • express your opinion and motivate;
  • learn how to connect ideas;

German B2 (DE-B2) and B2plus (DE-B2plus)

In German B2, you will learn to:

  • give presentations;
  • make your case in an argument;
  • carry out discussions with native speakers;
  • bring up topics relating to work or studies in class discussions;

  • express thoughts and opinions;

  • understand reports, interviews, talk shows and speak about different point of views;

  • debating and presenting a topic;

  • read literary texts and write a summary;

  • talking about topics such as travelling, beauty, friendship, technology, work, communication, culture, 

    to express feelings and emotions;

  • express an positive or negative opinion;

    ​

  • prepare a letter of application and analyse job applications.

German B2plus is primarily a discussion forum in which you must play an active role. During this module, you will learn to:

  • express your thoughts and justify your position in discussions and debates;
  • learn how to present yourself well in an interview;
  • hand in written assignments, in which you will have to pay special attention to grammar.

Online intakes and registration

UM students, staff and external participants are welcome to join the course. I

If you have no prior knowledge of German, you can simply register for level A1 by using our registration form for language courses. After registering, you will receive a confirmation. If you would like to take any of the other levels, you must first successfully complete the previous level, or demonstrate a comparable level of German. 

If you already have some knowledge of the language and would like to join a non-beginners group then please schedule an online intake by using our scheduling system to make an appointment, free of charge. 

Book an online intake well before the course is scheduled to begin. This process will make it easier to make the appointment, and more likely that there will still be an available spot in the module that’s right for you. Also take a short test via the website sprachtest.de and tell us the results with exact points during the appointment.

Certification and ECTS credits

After successfully completing a course, you will receive a certificate. To be eligible for a certificate, you must attend at least 12 of the 14 lessons, be present at the final exam and have satisfactory results. One course is worth 3 ECTS credits. Whether these credits are acknowledged depends on your faculty. Please consult with your faculty / home university if these credits will be accepted as part of your programme.
