You’re really encouraged to think critically about what you've just read and put it into practice afterwards.

Hi, my name is Jonas, and I'm studying the International and European Tax Law Master's at Maastricht University. In addition to my studies, I had the opportunity to participate in a moot court competition in Leuven.

I chose to study international tax law because I wanted to gain a deep understanding of how tax treaties work and how European law impacts cross-border tax transactions. After earning my degree in tax law in Belgium, I began searching for a Master's programme in Maastricht. Friends had told me it was a lovely city, and I discovered that the Maastricht programme has an excellent reputation and is highly renowned in the field.

Among the many courses I’ve enjoyed, my favourite is Responsible International Tax Planning. I find it particularly valuable because it prepares you for a career in planning the taxes of multinational enterprises in a solid and responsible manner. The course emphasizes fiscal ethics, which I believe is crucial for this field.

I would strongly encourage anyone considering it to study at Maastricht University. Based on my experience at multiple universities, I can say that Maastricht stands out for its teaching approach. Instead of just listening to lectures and absorbing theory, here you are encouraged to engage with the material actively. You read papers, think critically about the content, and apply it in practice. It’s a unique and rewarding way to learn.

If you're interested in joining the Master's programme, feel free to contact us or visit our Maastricht Master's Open Day.

I think it’s great to be in small groups and classes, and to really apply the things that you learn.
