Mathijs chose to study Data Science and Artificial Intelligence because he had always had an interest in computers and how they are programmed. "I want to learn how to gain insight from large amounts of data." He describes his bachelor programme as follows: "DSAI is a no-nonsense study. In the first year, you will learn the fundamentals of your career as a data scientist or AI professional. This basis can be quite abstract, and it may appear that the courses are not closely related. However, later on, you will notice that courses complement and build on one another."

Mathijs particularly enjoys programming courses. "These courses give immediate gratification; you are really creating something useful." He enjoys hanging out with his new friends: "The classes are quite large, so you will always find people to connect with. I enjoy playing pool, and we frequently play it in the evenings while having a drink. Maastricht is a very nice city. The parks are beautiful. There are many nice restaurants and places to party."
