Marcell Ignéczi (Hungary), Bsc Data Science and Artificial Intelligence / Msc Data Science for Decision Making
The theoretical knowledge I gained from the programme is something I would never have learned on the job.

Marcell Ignéczi studied for six years at Maastricht University, earning his bachelor's degree in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence as well as his master's degree in Data Science for Decision Making. He now runs a data science and artificial intelligence consulting firm.

"I spent my high school years in Brussels and decided not to study in my home country, Hungary." I went to some bachelor's open days in Maastricht and fell in love with the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence programme. It offers mathematics, data science, and computer science, all of which I love and am interested in, so I chose to begin my studies in Maastricht."

One of the best

Marcell stayed for his master's programme after graduating. Despite looking into other programmes in the Netherlands, he eventually decided on Maastricht University again. “Data Science for Decision Making (DSDM) ranks very highly in the Netherlands and the rest of Europe as one of the best masters in the field. Now that I am out in the world, I can see why DSDM ranks high. The theoretical knowledge I gained from the programme is something I would never have learned on the job. DSDM truly allows you to delve deeply into the subject in order to gain a thorough understanding of it. Alumni from other universities with whom you compete on the job market will never catch up."

Enjoying Limburg

After finishing his studies, Marcell co-founded COMPUTD, a data science and artificial intelligence consultancy company in Geleen, near Maastricht. "We do straight-up AI consulting for basically every company that applies." Nike, ASML, VDL-Nedcar, and the soccer team Fortuna Sittard are among his clients. "We employ twelve people; most of them are alumni of Maastricht University."

Marcell could have applied for jobs all over the world after earning his MSc. As an exchange student, he worked in Singapore for a short time. Yet, he returned to the Netherlands to co-found COMPUTD. "I enjoy Limburg, despite the fact that it is very different from cities like Amsterdam or London. The people here are friendly. The fact that you have greenery and hills is unique and amazing."

I love living in Maastricht. The people are warm and friendly. As a member of one of the student associations, I truly enjoy the city's student life. In my spare time, I sail with the sailing association, climb, and read about new developments in data science and artificial intelligence.

The Department of Advanced Computing Sciences of Maastricht University has been doing research since 1987; surely 35 years ago not many people knew what Artificial Intelligence was. The experience of this department is why I came to study my bachelor’s in the first place.

We do lots of brain storming, write some code or set up some math. We get regular advice from the project supervisor. Sometimes the advice is very helpful. Other times it is not helpful.

A very nice place in my faculty is the Swarmlab, where you get access to equipment you don’t usually have.
