Why Laura chose Psychology / Neuropsychology
Studying at Maastricht University (UM) is a personalised, life enriching experience that prepares you for the future, both professionally and personally. Our bachelor’s and master’s programmes are designed for students who have an intrinsic curiosity in human behaviour and health. Students ‘who want to go the extra mile’ on a professional and/or personal level. What’s your extra mile?
Laura, 23, is from Spain and came to Maastricht for the master’s programme in Psychology / Neuropsychology. “After completing my bachelor’s degree in Biomedicine from the University of Barcelona in 2019, I did an internship as a researcher in the field of ‘Brain & Cognition’. I then knew for sure I wanted to do a master’s programme in Neuropsychology.”
Laura’s extra mile in health: “Study the effects of pharmaceuticals on patients with psychotic disorders and further develop my critical thinking”
“I wanted to do my Master in Maastricht because this area is renowned for its research opportunities in the neuropsychology field. I knew people that had studied here and spoke very positively about Maastricht University. I also looked at research master’s programmes, but chose this programme because it was one year, with more focus on neuropsychology. So far I haven’t regretted my decision for one second. The Problem-Based Learning method suits me well and the topics in the programme are very interesting.
I would like to focus on schizophrenia and psychotic disorders and the underlying neural mechanisms as well as conduct research with regard to the effects of pharmaceuticals. My goal is to do a PhD after I graduate. Preferably here, because I like this open-minded society with its good work-life balance.
My dream is to be able to not only conduct research, but also spread my scientific knowledge to non-experts, using social media. There are so many fun facts about your brain and your mind to talk about.”
