Gill Carter (Ireland), Global Health
The university’s optimism absolutely lifts my energy!

Gillian chose to come to Maastricht for the master’s programme in Global Health. “I graduated in International Development and Food Policy at the University of Cork in 2013. I then went to Tanzania for a three-month project in community development, which turned into four years! While applying for master’s studies in the UK, I got another job offer in Tanzania for one year with a global network for women advocacy.

I took the job with the advocacy network but still felt the need to broaden my knowledge with a master’s study, so I came back after one year. When I came across this programme at UM I was immediately attracted by its combination of practical skills and academic knowledge.

Even though I’m particularly interested in gender issues and sexual and reproductive health in women, I was looking for a broader programme, while being able to focus on my personal preferences at the same time. I’m very happy with my choice since I’ve found everything is put together very strategically and builds on the knowledge and skills acquired so far. What also impresses me is the general optimism the university radiates, which absolutely lifts your energy. Especially since in this field of work you’re often faced with huge challenges.

My future definitely lies in East-Africa and I would love to do my internship there. After my graduation I aspire to go back to Tanzania and settle. I’m passionate about women’s issues and indigenous people like the Masai tribe. My dream goal is to be engaged in the sexual and reproductive health of Masai girls and women and empower them ‘bottom-up’.”
