"I am a student from the UK. I ‘discovered’ Maastricht University when I was looking for study options abroad. Looking at the website there were aspects of the course which immediately appealed to me, such as the teaching of practical skills from the first year, the Problem-Based Learning style and the numerous opportunities to go abroad during the six years. After attending an Open Day I was more than convinced to apply!

The great thing about the International Track in Medicine (ITM) group is that there are people here from all over the world. For example, there are students of 14 different nationalities in my year! I find it so interesting to see and learn about the cultural differences between countries.

One of my favourite parts of the programme are the Simulated Patient Contacts (SPCs), where you have the opportunity to practice your consultation skills with actors. The SPCs are recorded so that you and the students in your group can review each consultation. This is done under the guidance of the group mentor. I think the development of good communication skills is essential in becoming a modern-day doctor, and I find this is a great way to improve these skills.

Another thing I like about Maastricht is that we are regularly encouraged to look at things from the patient’s perspective. At the start of my current block we interviewed a diabetic patient. Before the interview I had the impression that diabetes was quite a manageable condition, but as a result of this exercise I learned of the difficulties faced by patients who are constantly having to think about maintaining a stable blood glucose level (which can often be difficult given the unpredictable behaviour of the body), alongside managing the frequent hospital visits when complications arise.

There are so many other benefits of studying in Maastricht, such as the facilities provided by the university (for example the gym and sports activities organised), and the benefit of living in a city full of students. I really am so pleased that I’m studying here!"
