Volledige vakbeschrijving
Growing consumption is the engine that drives our economy. Constant growth however has worldwide major environmental impact and endangers live on earth. The dilemma we currently face is that giving up on growing means risk of economic and social collapse. Maintaining growth however leads to risk of destroying global ecosystems. Sustainability demands that no more is consumed than can be regrown, regenerated and provided again in the future. Sustainability means a good life for the world population within the ecological boundaries of our planet. Sustainable development also entails equal development opportunities for all people and for future generations. To achieve this, economic growth should be decoupled from resource consumption and quality of life. Environmental policies to reduce ecological burden will inevitably lead to issues of justice with regard to legitimacy and approval. Sustainable living in rich countries entails solidarity with other people (in low-income countries) and with future generations. Understanding the environment, the economy and social networks is crucial and urgent in sustainable living.VHU2001
