Basic Mathematical Methods
Volledige vakbeschrijving
Neuroscientific research has greatly benefited from recent developments in data analysis methods. The aim of this course is to provide participants with the basic 'tools' needed to gain a better understanding of the data analysis methodologies and to help them develop methods and strategies to tackle their research problems. The course will cover the basic aspects of number representation, with an emphasis on complex numbers, needed for Fourier analysis, and will then focus on basic algebra. The course will cover in detail vectors and matrices and their operations, including sums, products, inversion and eigenvalue decomposition and linear systems of equations. The course will also focus on the basic concepts of calculus, including infinitesimals, differential and integral calculus. Each session of the course has a practical component attached, in which the participants solve, with the aid of the tutor, a number of exercises. These are both pen-and-paper and MATLAB computer-based exercises. Furthermore, a selected range of applications of the illustrated concepts in the field of neuroscience are provided throughout the course.
