The course introduces you to the importance of energy for society while focusing on the urgency of the transition towards renewable energy, useful for students aiming at any of the concentrations. You are introduced to different energy sources and systems including those based on fossil fuels, nuclear-, wind-, geo-, tidal- and solar-power. Furthermore, you are introduced to the concept of exergy and accordingly, evaluate the different methods to provide energy. A quantitative analysis of the efficiency, sustainability and viability of renewable energy options is obtained by performing basic calculations on the various energy systems. Lastly, you are introduced to energy policies and both the technical and societal limits of the covered energy systems, including safety considerations and issues of social acceptance.
