The field of physiology describes the function and interaction of various building blocks (cells, tissues, organs, organ systems) of the human body. Models of physiological systems can be used to gain better understanding of (patho-) physiological events. In addition, models may be used to translate clinically measurable information into information that cannot be measured, but is of great diagnostic value. One of the aims of this course is to illustrate the use of mathematical models for the analysis of cardiovascular function. In particular, we are interested in models that can be used to understand the interaction of the heart with the vascular system in terms of pressure, volume and flow.Doelstellingen van dit vak
The main objectives of this course are: 1. to apply basic knowledge of the mechanical properties of cardiac- and vascular tissue, when explaining the (interaction between) function of the heart and vessels under normal and pathophysiological conditions; 2. to apply and adjust mathematical lumped-parameter models for heart and circulation, in order to analyze cardiovascular function under normal and pathophysiological conditions; 3. to interpret the electrocardiogram based on the knowledge of cardiac electric activity on cellular and organ level; 4. to explain neurohumoral control mechanisms of heart and circulation, applying mathematical models of baroreflex and chemoreflex.Aanbevolen literatuur
