Philosophy of Science introduces students to the various theories of scientific knowledge. Scientific knowledge is held in high esteem in our culture. Given the role of science in our society it is important for students to develop a well-argued notation of what science is about. Examples of questions that are addressed in this course are, among others, how do we differentiate scientific knowledge from other forms of knowledge? How do we gather scientific knowledge? Is there progress in science? After completing this course the student will have a basic understanding of the various of scientific knowledge; The student will be able to reflect on fundamental issues with regard to science; And the student will be able to argue more clearly and explicitly for or against ideas on the nature of science.
