Chemical Engineering
Volledige vakbeschrijving
This course introduces you to the field of Chemical Engineering and prepares you for the more advanced chemical engineering courses. The course starts with freshening up high school chemistry followed by basic principles for designing a chemical process. Circularity and sustainability in chemical industry is incorporated with examples from the Brightlands Chemelot Campus.Doelstellingen van dit vak
"At the end of this course, you will be able to: - Explain fundamental concepts of chemistry, such as the difference between atoms, molecules and ions; difference between protons, electrons, neutrons; chemical bonding in molecules; different phases and phase transitions. - Understand different kinds of chemical reactions, determine stoichiometry and calculate with moles, particles and kilograms for chemical reactions. - Name hydrocarbons and make reaction equations. - Understand different aspects of designing a chemical production process and make process flow diagrams of a production process. - Identify opportunities to make current bulk chemical processes more sustainable by analysing the process with respect to non-sustainable aspects (fossil fuel, fossil feed stock, green house gas emission, overproduction of heat, byproduct/waste product). - Find developments in books, articles and the internet to increase sustainability and circularity and can choose those developments that might be applicable in a specific process based on its characteristics.Voorwaarden
